Three
weeks from zero to a 9.06 ET
This will document what we
accomplished, with help from many people and sponsors a car that took on
a life of it's own. We started with something that needed a lot of work
and ended up with a very nice car capable of an 8 second 1/4 mile time.

Beginning of build
Listed on our local web
message board was a notice that Pinks the TV show was looking for racers
for an upcoming filming at Pacific Raceways in Kent Washington. Allen
came over to Horsepower Connection and we called the show and talked to
Richard Christensen the shows inventor. After talking with him for
almost an hour we decided that we would take Allen's 1979 Malibu and
make a nice looking, turbo, fuel injected car capable of running a 10.50
quarter mile time. After hanging up the phone with Rich I immediately
started calling potential sponsors. I first called Britco Racing Engines
for help with a good engine to throw some boost at, then I called Phil
Rohr from Phil's Race Cars to help make the chassis work and make the
necessary updates to the cage. Most of the first week was taken up
calling and getting sponsors and making sure things were shipped out so
we could start working on the car. During the day I was on the phone
talking to potential sponsors and during the night we would work at
least until 12:00am, most of the time even later than that. One of the
hardest things with this build was the constant checking and re-checking
to make sure things were getting shipped on time and parts were actually
shipped. Without parts we could not build a car.
Parts
Started to come in.
Our first major part that was donated was the cylinder heads. The
heads, crank, rods, main and rod bearings were donated by Robert from
Chaos Drag Racing Team
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/dragrace/
They started life out as 64cc combustion chamber, 2.02 intake and
1.60 exhaust, 200cc intake runner heads from PBM.part number 1982363
These heads were immediately taken over to Shawn Willis for some
cylinder head porting. We also took over our Edelbrock Victor Jr EFI
intake for some port work. The heads turned out much better than
expected with flow numbers of 240cfm stock and 290cfm when Shawn was
finished.

Next the rest of the engine was assembled by Britco Racing Engines in
Centralia, Washington. Britco was one of three major sponsors on this
build. They really went above and beyond getting our engine done in
time. Some of the parts donated by Britco were the stock GM block with
splayed caps, SRP pistons, cam bearings, freeze plugs, pushrods, rocker
arms and many more things. They also donated all machine work, engine
assembly and engine dyno time. Check them out

cover, rear main and thermostat gaskets were provided by SCE gaskets
http://www.scegaskets.com. They
make some kick ass ICS Copper head gaskets that require no o-rings in
the block or head. The custom roller cam, Roller Lifters, Valve
Springs and Retainers were provided by Erson Cams

The cam specs are:

That night after we were done with engine assembly we rolled the engine
over to the engine dyno room. We just wanted to break the engine in
without a turbo and put on a carb to make it run. The engine made just
over 400hp with a 750cfm carb and very lean. We knew that things would
dramatically change when we put the turbo and EFI on the engine so we
didn't spend much time tuning the carb.
